Academic Freedom For ALL

Director of Academics for Academic Freedom, Dennis Hayes, gives an insider’s account of the defence of Michael Ben-Gad’s academic freedom.

Academic Freedom For ALL
Students at City University demanding that Professor Michael Ben-Gad is sacked.

Vicious attacks on any academic or student with any connections to Israel are the nasty side of universities in 2025. The calls of pro-Palestine activists are no longer for a ‘ceasefire’ in Gaza but to silence, discipline, or sack individuals. This is where we are just over two years since the pogrom of October 7th. It appears to be the beginning of a Jew hunt in our universities.

A Jew hunt at City University
An Israeli Jewish professor is being hounded by ‘anti-Zionist’ students for being an Israeli Jew.

As the director of Academics For Academic Freedom (AFAF) I, along with fellow AFAF Advisory Board member, Professor Ian Pace, were the first to alert the University of the attacks on Professor Michael Ben-Gad at City and St. George’s University. Like Michael, Ian is also a distinguished academic at the University. Michael and Ian were founding members of the City St. George’s branch of AFAF. We held our Annual Conference in November 2023 at the University. We began the event with an address from the President, Sir Anthony Finkelstein, on his vision of academic freedom.

It was one of our student members who alerted us to the attacks on Michael Ben-Gad by a ‘City Action For Palestine’ student group on Instagram. They condemned him as a ‘TERRORIST’ because he undertook mandatory military service in the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) and – shock – he worked at the University of Haifa. They railed that he was an ‘evil’ Zionist who made the University an unsafe space. They called upon the President to apologise for his appointment, to sack him and to make no further appointments of staff with connections with Israel. Here are some of their posts:

They had previously denounced the President for adopting a principled position of institutional neutrality over the conflict in Gaza:

Ian and I discussed what to do on Monday October 13th. We knew the University would uphold academic freedom and, rather than go for publicity, we decided that we would inform Anthony the next morning. We did this because our usual approach when undertaking case work it to proceed through discussion rather than making threats or demands. Not that we are unwilling to do that, if necessary.

Our approach was successful. Anthony was unaware of the material we sent him, and his response was immediate. He sent us his statement in defence of Michael. He has instructed the University’s Freedom of Speech Referral Group to meet and consider the matter. He told us that he had also written to Michael:

In the interim and in my capacity as President I want to make clear that the University supports your right to academic freedom and to freedom of expression without fear of harassment or defamation. We are committed to scholarship and education, and immediately, firmly, and unequivocally reject any attempts to harass, defame, or obstruct your work in this, or other regards.

We left the matter in the University’s hands so that protections for Michael’s academic freedom could be put in place, and — as Michael emphasised to us — the protection of other Jewish staff and students. Just before the Battle of Ideas weekend we did put a brief entry on our influential Banned List, along with entries for calls to no-platform speakers at the London School of Economics who were discussing sexual violence by Hamas on October 7th. (Shockingly, even a feminist group was involved in this.)

THE BANNED LIST
A growing list of speakers, academics, and others in the UK and Ireland who have been banned, censored, disciplined or otherwise threatened for their views.

Ian and other colleagues decided that more had to be done when masked students began noisy demonstrations on campus. They had gone too far:

On Monday October 20th, Ian was the lead signature on an open letter in defence of Michael:

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned by a targeted harassment campaign against Michael Ben-Gad, Professor of Economics at City St George’s, University of London, led by a group calling themselves City Action for Palestine. They have mounted a social media campaign, staged very loud protests in the University Building, and launched a Change.org petition. They are calling for Professor Ben-Gad to be sacked, on the grounds that he – an Israeli citizen who studied, taught and worked in Israel at various times – served in the Israel Defence Forces in the early 1980s. Israel has long-standing conscription laws for all Jewish, Druze and Circassian citizens, men and women alike, which have been in place since the beginning of the state, so practically anyone else from these groups who came of age in Israel would also have served in the IDF. The harassment campaign has included libellous claims such as branding Professor Ben-Gad a ‘terrorist’ and ‘war criminal’ and has made comparable accusations against the President of City St George’s, Sir Anthony Finkelstein.
Regardless of diverse views on the recent Gaza war and the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, we deplore any campaign that seeks to intimidate and drive out lecturers because they are Israeli, Jewish, or members of any other group. We are immensely grateful to hear of the strong support given by the President and Senior Leadership Team to the Professor in question, and we wish to register our equal support.
Academics and students have a right to go about their work at any university without facing harassment. Attacks of this kind are intimidating, particularly to Jewish students, and set a precedent under which others could be targeted in future. We wish to make clear to what appears to be a small, if very vocal, group that their mobbing tactics will not succeed. We stand together in support of Professor Ben-Gad and his personal and intellectual freedom as an academic.

At the time of writing, the open letter has over one thousand signatures from academics from across the world.

Because of the letter, the attacks on Michael were reported in the national and international press and across social media. The hate that spewed out did not move him. Although the students disrupted his lectures, they had picked the wrong man and the wrong university.

Michael praised the support he had from the University and others. He told the Daily Mail:

I have enjoyed the full support of the President, Prof Sir Anthony Finkelstein, and the entire senior management team of the university. Anthony and I are both the sons of Holocaust survivors and understand completely the true nature of this campaign…I should add that I have also received plenty of support from dear colleagues of all faiths and backgrounds.
Security ramped up after pro-Palestine students target Israel academic
Pro-Palestine students at City St George’s demanded the termination of Michael Ben-Gad’s contract over his alleged role ‘working in a genocidal society’.

As an AFAF member he was concerned that he:

may have been specifically targeted because of my role in campaigning for academic freedom which seems to trigger a rather disparate variety of extremists. … I am a classical liberal. Students have a right to express their opinions, even if, personally, those views are abhorrent. That even includes the production of inflammatory pamphlets about me. However, they do not have a right to disrupt, harass, threaten, or physically intimidate.

Michael stood firm when a few masked students briefly disrupted one of his classes:

I have nothing but praise for the principled stance taken by the University. Other Jewish staff, and students, at other institutions may not find they have such support.

Speaking at the AFAF Annual Conference at City University in November 2023 I said that after October 7th the defence of free speech would be “messy”. It was hard to defend the free speech of those whose views you find distasteful, hateful, or immoral — but you must.

Free Speech no ifs, no buts.

This year I am going to say that the defence of free speech will require bravery. Academics and students will have to make public their commitment to free speech and refuse to be intimidated and to fight back. Ian has already suggested working with scenarios that teach us how to walk past noisy, even hysterical, demos. I would suggest more. Following the lead of Our Fight we should make banners saying, ‘We Defend Academic Freedom’ and ‘Academic Freedom For ALL’, and hold them up in front of the cowardly, masked, and censorious mobs.

The important thing is not for academics and students to do this on their own, however noble this may seem, but for them to get involved with groups that defend free speech such as AFAF, and Student Academics For Academic Freedom (SAFAF). We have branches throughout the UK and Ireland and will work with Our Fight and other organisations to oppose antisemitism wherever it raises its ugly head on campus.

Academics For Academic Freedom
Academic freedom - the responsibility to speak your mind and challenge conventional wisdom - defines the university and stands as a model for open debate.
